Questions, answered

Do I need a sponsor or another exam before the Series 65?

No. NASAA's own FAQ says it plainly: you do not need a sponsor for the Series 63, 65 or 66, and an unsponsored candidate who is not Form U4 registered can open an exam window through FINRA and pay for it. FINRA lists the Series 65's co-requisites as "None". You don't need an SSN or a CRD number to book it either. It's the one securities exam you can decide to take on a Tuesday — and it stands on its own, unlike the Series 66, which only becomes effective once you also hold the SIE and the Series 7.

Can I study without an internet connection?

Yes. Open your flashcards once while online and your due cards download to your phone automatically — no button to press. Practice questions download too. You can then review with no signal at all, and everything you answer saves on your device and syncs the moment you're back online, even if you closed the app in between. Narrated audio and full-length mock exams are the two things that still need a connection.

Is there an app to download?

There's nothing to install from an app store. Open Capital Prep in your phone's browser and add it to your home screen — on iPhone that's Share → Add to Home Screen, on Android it's the Install prompt. It then opens full-screen like any other app, takes up almost no space, and is always the current version because there's nothing to update.

What do I get for free?

The entire 810+ page study guide, free, with no card. You can read every page, highlight it, and make flashcards from it. Practice questions, mocks and the AI tutor are part of the paid passes.

How does the SurePass Guarantee work?

Score 80%+ on one full-length mock, sit the real exam, and if you don't pass we refund what you paid. On Lifetime, clear two mocks with your readiness meter at "Getting close" or above and we also pay your full $187 retake fee. You file the claim in your account with your official score report.

Are the questions like the real exam?

They're written to NASAA's Series 65 test specifications — the ones effective 12 June 2023 — and weighted to its four topics, so a mock is the same shape as the real thing: 140 questions in 180 minutes. NASAA scores 130 of its 140 and holds the other 10 back as unscored pretest items; on our mocks every one of the 140 counts, so your score — including the 80% the SurePass Guarantee asks for — is out of all 140. They are exam-style questions written to the published outline; NASAA's real items are never available outside the exam room, and nobody who sells prep has seen them.

What score do I need to pass?

At least 92 of the 130 scored questions — about 71%. Watch out for the old number: NASAA lowered the mark from 94 to 92 on 12 June 2023, and a lot of study sites still print 94 (or "72%"). The 10 pretest questions don't count either way, and you won't know which ones they are.

What happens if I fail — how soon can I re-sit?

NASAA sets the waiting periods for its own exams: 30 days after a first failure, 30 days after a second, and 180 days after a third, counted on failures in a rolling two-year window. There's no limit on attempts as long as you respect the wait. The exam fee is $187 and it is charged again every time — NASAA's FAQ calls the fee non-refundable and non-transferable — which is exactly the cost our Lifetime guarantee reimburses.

I already hold a CFP or a CFA. Do I still need this exam?

Possibly not. NASAA says most states let you substitute one of five professional designations for the exam: CFP, ChFC, MSFS, CFA, PFS or CIMA (the list was updated and approved in May 2024 — CIC came off it, and a CPA on its own has never been enough). But the waiver is granted by your state securities administrator, not by NASAA, so check with your state before you rely on it. A designation waives the Series 65 only — never the Series 66.

Which pass should I buy?

Match it to your exam date. Sitting within a week, the 7-Day Pass is built for that. A month out, the 30-Day. No date yet, or you want it to keep working after you pass — Lifetime.

What happens when my pass expires?

Your progress is kept. You can upgrade at any time and pick up exactly where you were — and upgrades always credit what you already paid.

My exam date moved. Does the plan adjust?

Yes. Change the date and the plan rebuilds around your new one.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes — everything syncs across devices, and the reader, flashcards and practice all work on a phone.

Why are SurePass guarantees limited?

Because they're real commitments — every guarantee is a refund, and on Lifetime a retake fee — we may genuinely pay out, so we underwrite 25 of them each week for the Series 65. If a week's allocation is claimed, buying still works: your guarantee simply activates the following Monday, when unclaimed spots reset.

Do you offer refunds if I change my mind?

Yes, separately from the pass guarantee: 24 hours on the 7-Day Pass, 48 hours on the 30-Day Pass, or 72 hours on Lifetime, measured from your purchase (or from your upgrade, if you upgraded) — no questions asked, as long as you haven't sat your exam yet. EEA and UK buyers also keep their 14-day statutory right. The SurePass Guarantee is the other promise — that one is about your exam result, not about changing your mind.
