Eligibility is gated by AAMA and is stricter than most medical-assistant credentials: you must be a student in or a graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited medical assisting programme, or a previous CMA (AAMA) recertifying, or a medical assisting educator with at least 1,000 hours of instruction, or qualify through AAMA's Alternative Pathway. Check AAMA's current requirements before you apply.

It depends which category you apply under, and AAMA publishes both figures: $125 if you are a completing student, a recent graduate or an AAMA member, and $250 if you are a nonmember. A fee is required for each attempt. That is why our Lifetime tier covers up to $250 toward your retake fee if you qualify and don't pass — the payout follows your actual receipt, so a $125 candidate is reimbursed $125.

AAMA allows six attempts in any 12-month period starting from your first, with no required waiting period between them, and each attempt needs a new application and fee. So you can be back in a seat quickly — which is exactly why the retake reimbursement on Lifetime is worth something here.

200 multiple-choice questions in 160 minutes of test time, delivered as four 40-minute segments with optional breaks between them. Of the 200, 180 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items placed at random. Three categories: Clinical Competency is 59% of the scored questions, General 21%, Administrative 20% — which is why our bank is weighted the same way.

AAMA reports a scaled score on a 200–800 range, and 405 is the current minimum passing score — set by a standard-setting study and changeable by the Certifying Board. Because it is a scaled score standardised against a reference group, it does not translate into a percentage of questions, so our readiness bar and our 80% mock target are OUR measures, not AAMA's. You get a provisional pass/fail at the test centre and the scored report about 24 hours later.

What we will not do is suggest these questions appear on the real exam — they do not, and no practice score can promise you a passing one.
