ABO does not publish one. They set the cut score with a panel of subject-matter experts using the Modified Angoff method, and the handbook gives no percentage and no scaled number anywhere in its 32 pages — a failing report gives you diagnostic feedback per content area instead. Our own guarantee bar is 80% on our mocks. That is our number, not ABO's, and we hold it deliberately high.

ABO requires a high-school diploma, GED or equivalent, and no experience at all. Your state board's rules sit on top of ABO's and can be stricter, so check your own state before you register.

ABO runs four testing windows a year — January 2–March 31, April 1–June 30, July 1–September 30 and October 1–December 21 — with monthly delivery inside each, at a Prometric centre or remotely by ProProctor. Registration closes 15 days before a window ends and ABO states there are no late registrations, so book before you start the final week of study.

ABO publishes the number, which most certifying bodies do not: the ABO Basic Exam had a 64.0% pass rate in 2024. So more than one in three do not pass. ABO does not publish how many people sat it, which is why you will not see us turn that percentage into a headcount.
