If what you need is a few hundred questions to see where you stand, take them — genuinely, they are useful and they cost nothing. What none of them has is a 290-page written course narrated end to end, four full 90-question papers on the real two-hour clock, a readiness score built from your own answers, or any promise at all about what happens if you fail. Those four things are what this costs money for, and if you only need the first thing on that list you should not be buying anything.

ServSafe sells the same exam at two prices and the difference is the proctor. The one most people buying their own prep end up on is the ServSafe Manager Exam (Online Proctor) at $99.00, which includes the proctoring and can be taken at home; a Pearson VUE testing-centre seat is the same $99.00. The cheaper line is a bare exam access code at $38.99 — but ServSafe prints beside it that it "Requires an exam proctor" and that "Additional fees will apply", and only a registered ServSafe instructor or proctor may administer the exam, so unless your employer or an instructor is supplying one, that $38.99 is not the whole cost and ServSafe does not publish what the rest is. A retake is simply buying it again: ServSafe's own words are "You must purchase another exam access code", there is no discounted retake, and nothing is refundable. The calendar matters too — you may take it twice within 30 days, a third attempt needs a 60-day wait from your last one, and no more than four attempts are allowed in a 12-month period.
