NHA requires a high-school diploma or GED — or you can apply provisionally if you will have one within 12 months — plus either completion of a phlebotomy training program or the work-experience pathway. Check NHA's current requirements before you apply, because they set them and they change them.

No, and that is worth being plain about. The CPT is a national certification; a handful of states — California, Louisiana, Nevada and Washington — license phlebotomists themselves and set their own rules on top. NHA says so in its own handbook: its requirements are separate and distinct from any requirement to practice under state law. We prepare you for the CPT examination. Check your state board for anything it asks beyond that.

$134, paid to NHA, and a retake is the full $134 again — NHA's handbook states that for each retake attempt you must re-register and pay the full examination price. 120 questions in two hours, of which 100 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items. Five domains, and two of them are more than half the paper: Routine Blood Collections at 28% and Safety and Compliance at 26%. Then Patient Preparation at 20%, Processing at 14% and Special Collections at 12%.

NHA reports a scaled score from 200 to 500 and 390 passes. The scale is weighted for how hard your particular form was, which is the point of it — and it also means it does not translate into a percentage of questions correct, so nobody can honestly tell you "390 is 78%". The 80% our mocks score against is our own bar, stated as ours, and it is the same score that qualifies you for the guarantee.

NHA sells both from the same store page as your exam application: the online study guide at $59, six online practice tests at $54, or the two together for $89. They come from the organization that writes the test plan and scores the exam, and that is a real advantage no third party can claim. Two things to know before you choose. NHA's own product page says the online materials "can only be accessed on your computer or tablet" — not a phone, not offline. And neither carries a guarantee: the exam fee is non-refundable and a retake is full price.
