Questions, answered
What's inside the study portal?
The full Fast Track Study System — every practice question, every flashcard deck, full-length mock exams, narrated audio, Miles the AI tutor, and the entire study guide, every chapter readable and highlightable. The cheat sheet — the highest-yield facts as a PDF — is in the study portal on every pass, with instant access to download it. Every pass opens all of it, backed by the SurePass Guarantee.
How does the SurePass Guarantee work?
Score 90%+ on one full-length mock, sit the real exam, and if you don't pass we refund what you paid. On Lifetime, clear two mocks with your readiness meter at "Getting close" or above and we also pay your full $275 retake fee. You file the claim in your study portal with your official score report. 90% is the highest qualifying bar we set on any exam, and it is deliberately high.
How many full-length mocks do I get?
Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 150-question paper weighted to NBCC's scored-item shares and timed to the real three hours forty-five minutes. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. One honest difference from the real paper, said up front rather than discovered on a mock: NBCC hangs its questions off eleven case narratives and ours stand alone. The item format is identical — four options, one best answer, no penalty for a wrong one — so a mock measures the judgment the questions ask for and the clock you have to make it in.
What is on the exam, and how is it delivered?
Eleven case studies. Each one is a single client followed through three sections — an intake summary, then two subsequent counseling sessions — with 9 to 15 multiple-choice questions hanging off that narrative. A form carries 130 to 150 questions in total and 100 of them are scored; one whole case study is unscored and you cannot tell which. You get 225 minutes for the questions inside a 255-minute session, with a scheduled 15-minute break after the fifth case. Once you move past a section you cannot go back and change it. It is delivered at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a remote proctor.
Are the questions like the real exam?
In item format, exactly: NBCC's own comparison of the old and new formats says "All questions are standard multiple choice: choose the correct answer among options A-D", with no negative marking, and every one of our 1,200 items is four options, one best answer, no penalty, and a written rationale on every option rather than only the right one. In structure, no, and here is the difference plainly. The real paper wraps its questions around eleven long case narratives and follows one client across three sessions; ours are standalone clinical vignettes. So we rehearse the judgment each question asks for and the weighting and the clock of the paper — we do not reproduce the eleven-narrative structure, and we will not tell you we do. We also never claim our items appear on the exam. They are original, written to NBCC's published content outline.
Why does one of the six domains have so few questions?
Because NBCC gives it no items. Its content outline weights Areas of Clinical Focus at 0% of the scored items and footnotes why: the domain "is evaluated through a variety of diagnoses and case scenarios appearing on each examination form and not at the item level." So we did the two honest things rather than one. The guide teaches that domain in full, and it is the longest chapter in the book, because the diagnoses are the substance of every case you will read. The question bank follows NBCC's weighting instead of padding itself out against a domain the authority does not score. If a seller advertises a share of the paper for that domain, check it against Table 1 of the outline.
What score do I need to pass?
NBCC publishes no percentage, and the reason matters: the cut score is set by a standard-setting study and then statistically equated form by form, and the handbook says outright that "the cut score of each examination version will vary slightly." The most you can score is 100 scored points; the line you have to clear moves with the paper you are given. Anyone quoting you a fixed NCMHCE passing percentage is quoting a number that does not exist. Our mocks are scored against our own 90% bar — ours, not NBCC's — and that is the same score that qualifies you for the guarantee.
What does the exam cost, and what does a retake cost?
$275, and a re-sit is that fee again — there is no repeat discount anywhere. NBCC's handbook does not print the figure at all; it says only that "the examination fee is required each time a candidate reregisters." The number comes from the state boards that collect it: the Virginia Board of Counseling's own page says "the current exam fee for either exam is $275.00", and Florida's board prints the same amount for a re-exam. Fees are "not refundable nor transferable" and are forfeited if you do not test inside your authorization window. That is a bigger re-sit bill than most licensure exams carry, and it is why our Lifetime tier covers your full $275 retake fee if you qualify and don't pass.
What happens if I don't pass?
You wait 30 days from your test date before you are eligible to retest, and then you go again at the next monthly administration with Pearson VUE availability. How many attempts you get is set by your state licensure board rather than by NBCC, you may test once per authorized window, and the full fee is due each time you reregister. So the cost of a failed sitting is a month of not being licensed plus the fee all over again — which is the reason to be certain before you sit rather than to sit and find out.
Which pass should I buy?
Match it to your exam date. Sitting inside a week, the 7-Day Pass is built for exactly that. A month out, the 30-Day. No date yet, or waiting on board approval, and Lifetime is the one that does not run out while you wait. One thing worth knowing before you choose: if you do not pass, the earliest you can retest is 30 days after your test date, and a 30-Day pass will not still be running by then.
Does this cover the NBCC certification route as well as state licensure?
Yes, because it is the same examination. NBCC publishes two candidate handbooks for it — one for state licensure and one for national certification — and the case studies, the content outline and the scoring are the same paper in both. What differs is everything around it: who decides you are eligible, what you pay, and where your score is reported. We prepare you for the exam, not for the application, so check your own route's requirements with your state board or with NBCC directly.
Is the exam changing?
Yes, on 1 July 2027, and NBCC has already published the specification. From that date it is ten case studies rather than eleven, the six domains are renamed and reweighted off a newer work analysis, and your result becomes a scaled score from 100 to 500 with a fixed passing point of 360 on every form. Note what NBCC says about that number in its own document: "scoring 400 points does not equate to 400/500 points or 80%. This interpretation is incorrect." Everything in this package — the guide, the bank, the mock weighting — is written to the content outline in force until 30 June 2027. If you are testing on or after 1 July 2027, ask us before you buy for that date.
My exam date moved. Does the plan adjust?
Yes. Change the date and the Game Plan rebuilds around the new one — it works backwards from your date, so a move forward compresses it and a move back spreads it out. Nothing is lost.
Can I use it on my phone, and does it work offline?
Yes to both. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like an app. Your due flashcards and a set of practice questions download automatically, so you can revise with no signal. The whole study guide downloads too, narrated audio included; scored mocks and the tutor still need a connection.
What happens when my pass expires?
Your account stays; the paid features stop. Your notes, highlights and flashcard history are all still there if you come back, and Lifetime never expires — which is worth something on a credential you renew every few years and an exam you may be advising supervisees about long after you pass it.
Do you offer refunds if I change my mind?
Yes, separately from the pass guarantee: 24 hours on the 7-Day Pass, 48 hours on the 30-Day Pass, or 72 hours on Lifetime, measured from your purchase (or from your upgrade, if you upgraded) — no questions asked, as long as you haven't sat your exam yet. EEA and UK buyers also keep their 14-day statutory right. The SurePass Guarantee is the other promise — that one is about your exam result, not about changing your mind.
Why are SurePass guarantees limited?
Because we honor them. Every guarantee is a real financial commitment we may genuinely pay out, so a limited number opens for this exam each day. The allocation resets at midnight in your own time zone, and the counter shows how many of today's are still open.
