The updated one. HSPA retired the previous CHL exam after 23 September 2026, ran a pilot of the updated exam from 1 to 15 October, and says regular testing of the updated exam resumes on 15 December 2026 — with no CHL testing at all between 16 October and 14 December 2026. Everything here is written to the content outline the updated exam uses: HSPA's four sections at 25% Planning and Decision Making, 23% Organizing, 29% Leading and 23% Governing and Compliance. That last section is the one to know about — on the previous outline it was called Controlling and carried 15%.

Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 150-question paper built to HSPA's four sections in the 2026 outline's own shares — 25/23/29/23 — and timed to the real three hours. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. Worth knowing what you are comparing that to: HSPA states it does not offer practice tests for any of its certification exams, so a full-length rehearsal is only ever something a prep provider builds.

$140 paid to HSPA, and a retake is the same $140 again — HSPA prints both on its own CHL page as "Initial Exam: $140 / Retake Exam: $140". There is no member rate and no retake discount, and that fee includes a $25 non-refundable submission fee and one attempt at a Prometric test center. Two things govern WHEN you can try again rather than what it costs: HSPA requires six weeks between attempts, and it is not testing the CHL at all between 16 October and 14 December 2026, so anyone who does not pass inside that gap cannot sit it again until testing resumes on 15 December 2026. A CHL exam is 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours, of which 125 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest items, and it is computer-based only — HSPA states a written version is not available. Ours are written to the 2026 content outline and weighted to its four sections the way HSPA weights them, so a mock is the same shape on the same clock. Every key was recomputed from the question itself before the explanation was read.

HSPA does not publish one — for the CHL or for any of its exams — and that is worth knowing before a prep site quotes you a figure. Its handbook says the passing point is criterion-referenced, set by "the Angoff procedure, supplemented by the Beuk Relative-Absolute Compromise method", and it releases no percentage at all. So nobody can honestly hand you a percent-correct target under HSPA's name. Yes — HSPA requires a current, full CRCST certification before you can apply for the CHL. From October 2026 it also asks for one of three things alongside it: 12 months and 2,080 hours of full-time-equivalent experience in sterile processing, the same in a leadership role, or an associate's degree or higher, with an experience-verification form or transcripts. Check HSPA's current requirements when you apply. If you passed your CRCST with us, everything you learned there carries straight over.

Not from HSPA. HSPA lists one structured course — Purdue University's Sterile Processing Leadership course — and is careful about what it is, in its own words: "This course is offered through Purdue University. It is NOT an HSPA product. It is preparation for the exam only, and passing a course does not equate to Certification." One live detail to check yourself before buying it: as of September 2026 Purdue's own page says the course "uses HSPA's 4th edition manual" and advises finishing before the exam changes, while HSPA says the updated exam is built from the 5th edition. Ours is written to the 2026 outline the updated exam uses.

No — HSPA itself states that no study-material purchase is required to sit the exam, and that its Certification Council does not develop, require, approve or endorse any specific training materials. The exam is written from HSPA's Sterile Processing Leadership Manual, and our study guide covers that same outline in plain language, with the questions, flashcards, mocks and study plan built around it. Some candidates like having the book as a reference too, and that is a fine way to go — worth knowing that HSPA publishes this one in print only, so it has to ship, while the guide here opens the moment you sign up.
