Two different bodies, and this is the thing people get wrong about 5331. ETS writes, delivers and scores the exam — and says plainly in its own words, "Passing scores are not set by ETS." The mark your report is judged against is a passing score of 162 on a 100–200 scale for this ETS-delivered test, and the body that sets it and publishes it is ASHA's Council For Clinical Certification. Worth knowing what kind of number that is: a scaled score, which ASHA says adjusts for the difficulty of the questions you happened to get, so it is not a percentage of items answered correctly. The proof is that the same standard reads 0.620 of the current 100–200 scale and 0.473 of ASHA's own earlier 250–990 scale — a real percent-correct bar does not move when the reporting scale does. Which is exactly why the 80% our own mocks are marked against is OURS and is never presented as ASHA's: it is the score that qualifies you for our guarantee, nothing more. Check your state licensing board as well — most adopt ASHA's number, but the board is a separate body from ASHA.

Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 132-question paper built to ETS's three content categories in the shares ETS prints — a third each — and timed to the real 150 minutes, which is 1.14 minutes an item. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. Worth knowing what you are comparing that to. ETS sells four authentic 5331 practice forms at $24.95 each and gives you one of them free when you register; they are fixed papers. Lifetime, for most people sitting this one, and the reasons are arithmetic rather than salesmanship. ETS makes you wait at least 28 days before you can book the same test again — its own rule, and it applies even if you canceled your scores. So somebody who buys a month, studies, sits on day 25 and does not pass is locked out until day 53, which is 23 days after a 30-Day pass has already expired. And Lifetime is the only tier that pays your full $146 retake fee when you have to sit again. The 30-Day is the right buy if your date is booked and close — a month is the honest study window for this exam and every vendor in the field says something similar. The 7-Day is a final-week tune-up and a way in, not a preparation for a clinical master's-level exam; we would rather say that than sell it to somebody who needs three months.

ETS charges $146 to sit 5331, plus a non-refundable 3% online service fee when you register online. There is no discounted retake: attempts two and three are a fresh registration at the same price. Then ETS's own Free After 3 program takes over — once you have three reported attempts on the same test title, further retakes are free and unlimited for five years, as long as your first attempt was on or after October 1, 2025. So the expensive sitting is the second one, and that is precisely the one our Lifetime guarantee is pointed at: your full $146 retake fee, one funded retake. What we reimburse is the base registration fee ETS itself prints, not the 3% service fee, a state surcharge or a date-change fee. And the cost that actually hurts on this exam is not the money — it is the 28 days, because a clinical fellowship start date does not move for a retake. One thing that is NOT a retake: if you miss your appointment entirely, ETS lets you re-register after three business days and the 28-day wait does not apply.

Every item is written to the three content categories ETS publishes and weighted the way ETS weights them — a third each to foundations and professional practice, to screening, assessment, evaluation and diagnosis, and to planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment. Four options, one key, and a reason given for every option, right and wrong, so a miss teaches something; each key was recomputed from the question itself before the explanation was read. The real form is 132 selected-response questions in one 150-minute sitting, which is 1.14 minutes an item, and our mocks run on that clock rather than untimed — pacing is the thing candidates underestimate on this exam. Where we differ: a lot of our items put you in front of a client and ask what to do next, which is the register ETS uses, but we cannot reproduce an ETS form, and nobody outside ETS can.

Worth having, and worth knowing exactly what they are — ETS sells prep in the same cart as the exam, so you will meet it at registration. The Study Companion for 5331 is a free PDF carrying the full content outline and 32 keyed sample questions. When you register you also get one authentic full-length interactive practice test free, and ETS sells four such forms at $24.95 each. ETS's own Speech-Language Pathology prep course is $199 for six months: nine lessons, knowledge checks and one full-length practice test, written by people who write the exam, which is something we cannot claim and will not pretend to. What no ETS product does is give you anything back if it doesn't work — its course page states no guarantee of any kind — and none of them is a narrated study guide with a scheduled card system behind it. Prices move and ETS runs seasonal bundles, so check them yourself.

Most people do, and we are not going to pretend otherwise — ASHA publishes the numbers itself. In test year 2024–25 it recorded 10,410 attempts and 83.0% of them passed. What is worth knowing is the direction of travel. ASHA's same table reported 91.5% passing in 2017–18; by 2024–25 it reported 83.0%. The share of attempts that did not pass has doubled in seven years, from 8.5% to 17.0%, and it has been at or above 16.9% for four consecutive years. Among examinees who report a degree, ASHA reports a lower figure again: 77.9% passing. So the belief a lot of candidates arrive with — that everybody passes the Praxis — is several years out of date, and the table that says so is ASHA's own, published in October 2025. We publish no pass rate of our own, for our own students, anywhere on this site.
