Questions, answered
What's inside the study portal?
The full Fast Track Study System — every practice question, every flashcard deck, full-length mock exams, narrated audio, Miles the AI tutor, and the entire study guide, every chapter readable and highlightable. The cheat sheet — the highest-yield facts as a PDF — is in the study portal on every pass, with instant access to download it. Every pass opens all of it, backed by the SurePass Guarantee.
What score do I need to pass?
Your state decides, and that is the part people get wrong about this test. ETS writes and scores 5165 and reports it on a 100-200 scale, but in ETS's own words: "Passing scores are not set by ETS, and they vary by state." Read off ETS's own state-requirements pages in September 2026, the published qualifying scores for 5165 run from 143 in Arkansas to 160 in Wyoming across 39 jurisdictions — and Kansas lists the test with no number at all. So two candidates can sit the same paper on the same morning and need different scores, which is exactly why you will not find a single number quoted on this page as though it were yours. Look yours up before you book; ETS publishes it. What you do get is a verdict. Your official ETS score report shows your score beside the score your state requires and states whether you passed — so pass and fail are real words on this test, they are just your state's line rather than a national one. The 85% our own mocks are marked against is ours, not ETS's, and it is also the score that qualifies you for the guarantee.
How does the SurePass Guarantee work?
Score 85%+ on one full-length mock, sit the real test, and if your official ETS score report comes back a fail we refund what you paid. On Lifetime, clear two mocks with your readiness meter at "Getting close" or above and we also pay your full $130 retake fee. Filing is one upload, because ETS does the hard part for you: the report prints your score, the score your state requires and the verdict on the same page, so there is nothing for you to look up and nothing for us to interpret. The bar our mocks are marked against is ours — ETS sets no qualifying score for 5165 — and it is a qualification for the guarantee, never a prediction of your state's line.
How many full-length mocks do I get?
Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 66-question paper built to ETS's four content categories in the shares ETS prints — 30% Number & Quantity and Algebra, 30% Functions and Calculus, 20% Geometry, 20% Statistics & Probability — and timed to the real 180 minutes. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. Worth knowing what you are comparing that to. ETS sells one official practice form for 5165 and says on its own product page that retaking or repurchasing it "does not give you different practice questions or change the order in which the questions are delivered" — and every registrant already gets one copy of it free.
How hard is 5165, really?
Hard enough that ETS's own numbers say so, and we are not going to dress that up with a pass rate nobody publishes. ETS publishes none for this test — it cannot, because it does not own the pass/fail decision — so you will not find one here or a figure dressed up to look like one. What ETS does publish, in its own Praxis Technical Manual, is how 5165 scores are actually spread: across 12,574 test takers between August 2022 and July 2025, all of them college seniors or above, the median was 168 and the middle half of them landed between 150 and 185. ETS's own note on that range is that it "provides an indication of the difficulty of the test". The part that matters is the width. A 35-point middle half and a standard deviation of 24.8 make 5165 the most widely spread Praxis title with more than 10,000 takers — the English Language Arts test's middle half is 16 points wide. Scores on this test are further apart than on any other big Praxis exam, which is another way of saying that on this one, preparation moves you further than it does anywhere else in the Praxis catalog.
Is 5165 the test my state wants?
Two things to settle before you buy anything on this exam, from us or from anyone, and both take one click. First: not every state uses Praxis at all. Texas runs TExES, California CSET, Georgia GACE, Massachusetts MTEL and Washington its own tests, and none of them lists 5165 — thirty-nine jurisdictions do. Second: "Praxis math" is sold under several codes and only one of them is this test. 5165 is the secondary mathematics content test. 5161 is its predecessor and ETS's own page for it returns a 404 today, though some sellers still stock guides for it. 5164 is the middle-school test, a different blueprint and a different paper. ETS publishes what each state requires on its own state-requirements pages, so check the code rather than the word "math", then buy for that code. Everything here — the questions, the guide, the mocks and the guarantee — is built for 5165.
Which pass should I buy?
Match it to the date you have booked, and on this test that usually means Lifetime. The reason is ETS's retake rule rather than anything about us: the 2026-27 Bulletin says a resit must be at least 28 days after your previous test date, so a fail costs you four weeks as well as the fee, and Lifetime is the only tier that funds the resit. If your date is inside a week, the 7-Day is built for exactly that. And the month's one weakness is already answered rather than hidden: a 30-Day buyer who does not pass gets a full refund AND Lifetime access free, so she is studying through the whole 28-day wait at no cost.
What does the test cost, and what does a retake cost?
ETS charges $130 to sit 5165, plus a 3% online service fee on anything you buy through its site. There is no discounted resit — a second attempt is a fresh registration at the same price — and the timing is the part that bites: at least 28 days between test dates, and ETS cancels the scores and keeps the fee if you sit sooner. Two things soften it, and both are ETS's, not ours. Its Free After 3 program gives unlimited free retakes once you have completed three attempts on the same test, for five years, so the bill is not open-ended. And its fee waiver covers one Praxis Subject Assessment a year for an enrolled student on financial aid with an EFC at or under $3,000, first come first served. Ask your program too — ETS sells institutions bulk vouchers for both the test and its own prep, valid two years, so plenty of candidates never pay this themselves. Where our Lifetime guarantee comes in is the resit you do pay for: it pays your full $130 retake fee, in full, which nothing else on this exam does at any price.
Are the questions like the real test?
Close, and here is exactly how. Every item is a four-option selected-response question written to ETS's four content categories and weighted the way ETS weights them, with one key and a reason given for every option — including why each wrong one is wrong, which is where the learning actually happens on a mathematics test. Each key was recomputed from the question itself before its explanation was read. The real 5165 is selected-response all the way through, so there is no format we are quietly leaving out, and ETS gives you an on-screen graphing calculator for the whole test — our mocks assume you have one and run the same 180-minute clock, because a three-hour paper answered under a two-hour habit is a different exam.
What about ETS's own practice materials?
Worth having, and worth knowing exactly what each one is. The Study Companion for 5165 is a free PDF carrying the full content outline and keyed sample questions. When you register for the test you also get one official interactive practice form free, and ETS sells further copies at $24.95 — with ETS's own caveat on the product page that repurchasing the same practice test "does not give you different practice questions or change the order in which the questions are delivered". Its Prep eBook is $45 for 206 pages that, in ETS's words, "cannot be printed or copied", and its QuizStack is $45 for 235 questions with six months' access. Bought separately those three come to $114.95, which is the ceiling this market reaches without leaving the authority's own checkout; ETS also resells a four-month Study.com course at $190 and bundles the test with prep from $162.75 to $344. They come from the body that writes the exam, which is something we cannot claim, and they are fixed papers with a clock on two of the three. What none of them does at any price is refund you or pay a dollar of $130 when you have to sit again. Prices move and ETS runs seasonal offers, so check them yourself before you buy.
What happens when my pass expires?
Your account stays and your work stays with it — notes, highlights and flashcard history are all there if you come back. The paid features stop. You can upgrade at any time and pick up exactly where you left off, and an upgrade always credits what you already paid.
My exam date moved. Does the plan adjust?
Yes. Change the date and the Game Plan rebuilds around the new one — it works backwards from your date, so a move forward compresses it and a move back spreads it out. Nothing is lost.
Can I use it on my phone, and does it work offline?
Yes to both. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like an app. Your due flashcards and a set of practice questions download automatically, and the whole study guide downloads too, narrated audio included — so a bus ride with no signal is still study time. Scored mocks and the tutor wait for a connection.
Do you offer refunds if I change my mind?
Yes, separately from the pass guarantee: 24 hours on the 7-Day Pass, 48 hours on the 30-Day Pass, or 72 hours on Lifetime, measured from your purchase (or from your upgrade, if you upgraded) — no questions asked, as long as you haven't sat your exam yet. EEA and UK buyers also keep their 14-day statutory right. The SurePass Guarantee is the other promise — that one is about your exam result, not about changing your mind.
Why are SurePass guarantees limited?
Because we honor them. Every guarantee is a real financial commitment we may genuinely pay out, so a limited number opens for this exam each day. The allocation resets at midnight in your own time zone, and the counter shows how many of today's are still open.
