200 multiple-choice items with four options and one correct answer, in four hours. Four domains, and BCSP publishes the weights to a decimal: Hazard and Risk Identification and Control 36.6%, Safety Program Development, Implementation, and Sustainment 22.5%, Leadership, Communication, and Training 21%, and Emergency Preparedness, Incident Investigation, and Response 19.9%. BCSP also says 10–15% of the items on its exams are experimental and do not count toward your pass or fail — it does not publish how many are scored on any given form, so the honest answer is that you sit 200 and somewhere between 170 and 180 of them count. You test on demand at a Pearson VUE centre, scheduled through BCSP's My Profile, and official results are available as soon as you submit.

Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 200-question paper weighted to BCSP's own four percentages and timed to the real four hours. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. The whole 1,600-item bank is eligible, which is eight full papers' worth, so nothing is held back behind a curated subset and no sitting repeats another.

Lifetime is worth real thought on this exam, because the clocks are BCSP's rather than yours: you get one year from the approval of your application to take and pass, you must wait six weeks between attempts, and if fewer than six weeks are left on that year when you fail, you cannot re-sit at all without buying a $100 eligibility extension. Lifetime is still there for the second attempt, and for the next credential cycle.

BCSP does not publish one, and anyone who gives you a number is guessing. We looked: the CHST page, the blueprint, the Credentials At-A-Glance sheet, the exam-development page and the self-assessment page all decline to print a passing score, the old examination-information page now redirects to BCSP's homepage, and the only sentence on the subject is At-A-Glance's "Fees and passing scores are subject to change without advance notice". What BCSP does describe is the method — a criterion-referenced Modified Angoff procedure, with the minimum passing score adjusted for the difficulty of the items, which means it is not even a constant between exam revisions. The 85% our mocks are scored against is ours, stated as ours, and it is deliberately set well above what a published cut would likely be. If you see a "scaled score of 140" quoted somewhere, treat it carefully: it appears on no BCSP page we can find, and it does not square with the numbers BCSP does publish — a mean score of 113.4 alongside a 61.8% pass rate.

More than one in three, and BCSP publishes the counts itself. In its Annual Report 2024, for the reporting year ending 30 September 2024: 2,578 candidates sat the CHST and 1,593 passed, a 61.8% pass rate — so 985 did not pass. Two things worth knowing about that figure. It is every candidate, not first-timers only: BCSP publishes no first-time/repeater split, which makes the number more conservative than a first-attempt rate, not less. And it is not a one-year wobble — the 2023 report gives 2,210 candidates at a 65% pass rate, so the trend is getting harder, and the CHST is the third-hardest of BCSP's eight credentials by pass rate.

$300 to BCSP for a single examination authorization, plus a one-time $140 application fee. A retake is the same $300, and it is worth being precise about why: BCSP publishes no retake fee, no retake discount and no retake line in its fee schedule at all — what it publishes is the price of an examination authorization and the rule that you must hold one to sit, so a second attempt means buying another. Its own exam bundle is the arithmetic that confirms it, at $550 for two attempts and a self-assessment against $300 for one. Two more BCSP rules cost money rather than time: you must wait six weeks after a failure, and if fewer than six weeks remain in your eligibility period you also have to buy a $100 eligibility extension to re-sit, so the worst case out of pocket is $400. It is real, it is good, and it is $999 for six months — the certifying body selling its own prep, and by far the biggest number in this market. You get more than 1,000 practice questions filterable by blueprint domain, 54 modules and about 25 hours of video, a pre-test, a post-test, challenge quizzes and a timed simulated exam you can repeat as often as you like. If you fail, you may be eligible to extend your access up to six months at no charge — access, not money. BCSP is straight about the limits: it publishes an impartiality statement saying the people who build examCORE are independent of the people who develop the exam, and its own CHST page states that "completion of examCORE does not guarantee a candidate will pass the BCSP exam". BCSP also sells a self-assessment at half the exam's length through My Profile, and does not publish its price. Doing examCORE and this is not a waste; doing examCORE instead of a full-length timed paper with a readiness meter is.

Today's exam is CHST5, version 2022.04.12, in force for every candidate since 1 August 2024, and that is what this whole system is built to. One dated thing to know: BCSP's exam-development page lists a CHST Job and Task Analysis panel for 7–9 December 2026, and a Job and Task Analysis is the activity that writes a new blueprint — item writing and a fresh passing-score study follow it. So a CHST6 is the expected outcome, plausibly live sometime in 2027. BCSP has published no effective date, only the panel date. If you buy Lifetime, the content refresh is included when it lands; we watch the blueprint document itself for the change rather than waiting to hear about it.

Every item is written to the CHST5 blueprint, domain by domain, with four options and one correct answer — the exam's own format. The weighting is measured rather than asserted: the bank comes out at 36.6 / 19.9 / 22.5 / 21.0 against a published blueprint of 36.6 / 19.9 / 22.5 / 21.0, and the smallest division still holds 318 questions, so nothing is thin. Every key was recomputed from its own question before the explanation was read, and every item carries a worked rationale. No BCSP item is reproduced anywhere — all 1,600 are ours. What we will not do is claim a number we have not measured: where we have audited how a bank is built we publish the result, and on this bank that audit has not been run yet, so no page here says it came back clean.
