Its own help centre, on the question of whether the official materials cover everything: “We are confident that a thorough understanding of the content of our study materials will lead to passing. ACAMS publishes a passing score of 75 with no published scale at all. That is the whole of it — one sentence in the candidate handbook and, across sixteen pages, no denominator, no “out of” and no scaling formula anywhere. So you will see prep sites turn 75 into a percentage; that is their arithmetic, not ACAMS's, and we are not going to print a percent sign ACAMS has never printed. Lifetime, for most people on this exam, and the reason is specific rather than generic. Two vendors in this market publish the same study window — most candidates spend eight to twelve weeks — so a month is the tail of a CAMS preparation rather than the whole of it, and seven days is a final week. Lifetime is also the only tier whose guarantee pays toward the ACAMS retake fee, and the only one still open the day you start on recertification, which CAMS asks for every three years for the rest of your career. Worth putting the number in context once, because it is easy to lose track of scale on this credential: Lifetime is a small fraction of what ACAMS charges for the certification package, and about half the cost of one failed attempt. ACAMS sells it as a package: US$2,095 for private-sector candidates and US$1,595 for public-sector candidates, covering the study guide, flashcards, the core and elective eLearning courses, the exam simulator and the exam itself. An active ACAMS membership is mandatory on top of that and is bought separately — in ACAMS's own words, “only ACAMS members can earn ACAMS certifications” — and membership is the one figure here we could not date recently: US$345 a year private sector and US$225 public when we last read ACAMS's membership page, with at least one third party reporting higher since. Read it on ACAMS's own page before you budget. A retake is not a discounted re-sit: the handbook says you pay for a new Authorization to Test, US$299 private sector and US$199 public sector, and then you wait — 30 days after a first attempt, 60 after a second, 90 after a third. Mostly, and here is the part that is not. Every one of the 606 questions is written by us from ACAMS's published outline — originally authored, never taken from or reconstructed out of real exam content, which matters more on this credential than on most: ACAMS has candidates represent that they have not received exam questions or answers from others, and sites trading in those can cost a candidate the designation. Each item has four options, one key and a reason given for every option, right and wrong, and each key was recomputed from the question itself before the explanation was read. Scenario items are the bulk of it, because that is what ACAMS says the exam measures — applying knowledge to life-like examples rather than reciting it. What we do differently, said before you find it: ACAMS describes the exam as multiple choice AND multiple selection, and ours are four-option single-best-answer throughout. A pick-two item is harder than a pick-one, so expect the real paper to bite in a way ours does not — which is part of why our own mock bar sits high rather than low.

Because of one line in ACAMS's own FAQ, and it surprises most candidates: “You may download the study guide, which is available in PDF format, to refer to after you have completed the CAMS Certification. Please note that once you have completed the CAMS exam, the study materials will no longer be available for you to access via the LMS.” You keep the PDF. Meanwhile CAMS is recertified every three years, and letting it lapse past the deadline means buying the certification package and sitting the exam again.
