Questions, answered
What's inside the study portal?
The full Fast Track Study System — every practice question, every flashcard deck, full-length mock exams, narrated audio, Miles the AI tutor, and the entire study guide, every chapter readable and highlightable. The cheat sheet — the highest-yield facts as a PDF — is in the study portal on every pass, with instant access to download it. Every pass opens all of it, backed by the SurePass Guarantee.
How does the SurePass Guarantee work?
Score 85%+ on one full-length mock, sit the real exam, and if you don't pass we refund what you paid. On Lifetime, clear two mocks with your readiness meter at "Getting close" or above and we also pay up to $350 toward your retake fee — one funded retest, whichever sections it covers. What counts as not passing: ABMDI grades each of its seven sections on its own and you pass only when you pass all seven, so a first sitting with any section failed is a sitting you did not pass. You file in your study portal with ABMDI's official result for that sitting. What it does not cover, stated plainly: the $50 application fee and the $400 exam fee you paid ABMDI, a second retest, the $15 replacement-application fee, the $50 annual maintenance fee once you are certified, recertification fees, any training-course tuition, and the start-over process ABMDI requires after a third failure.
How many full-length mocks do I get?
Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 240-question paper weighted across ABMDI's seven sections in the shares ABMDI prints — 10% Interagency Communication, 10% Communication with Families, 18% Scene Response and Documentation, 18% Body Assessment and Documentation, 14% Completing the Investigation, 10% Additional Medicolegal Death Investigator Duties, 20% Forensic and Medical Knowledge — and timed to the real four hours. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. ABMDI's own online sample is worth a look before exam day, but it exists, in ABMDI's words, "to show how to use the testing platform" — it is a walkthrough, not a scored rehearsal. Ours are drawn from the whole 1,320-question bank.
Which pass should I buy?
Most candidates should buy Lifetime, and the reason is ABMDI's calendar rather than salesmanship. It is the only tier that pays toward a retest, and on this exam a failure is usually one or two sections rather than the whole paper. It is also the only tier that outlasts a failed sitting: ABMDI makes you wait at least 30 days before a retest, allows three attempts inside a twelve-month cycle, and a 30-Day Pass can run out before the retest you would need it for. The 30-Day is right if your date is booked and close. The 7-Day is built for one job — a final-week readiness check on a full four-hour paper — and should be bought for that job only.
What score do I need to pass?
ABMDI does not publish one, and nobody quoting you a percentage is quoting ABMDI. Each of the seven sections has its own passing score, set in advance by a modified Angoff study in which subject-matter experts judge each question against an investigator with 640 hours of experience, and you must pass every section. Your result is pass or fail by section — in ABMDI's words, "The testing agency will not report numerical scores." Tentative results are emailed as soon as you finish. The 85% our mocks are marked against is ours, not ABMDI's, and it is deliberately demanding: it is also the score that qualifies you for the guarantee, and we would rather you find a weak section on our paper than on theirs.
What does the exam cost, and what does a retake cost?
ABMDI charges a $50 non-refundable application fee and a $400 non-refundable exam fee, the same for everyone. If you fail one or more sections you retest only those sections, and the fee depends on how many: $150 for one, $250 for two, $350 for three or more. Each retest is as long as the sections in it, at a minute per question, and has to wait at least 30 days after your last sitting. You get three attempts inside a twelve-month application cycle. Fail a third time and ABMDI requires you to start over: a new application, 640 more points of experience, a different practitioner signing off your task list, and every fee again. That is what our Lifetime guarantee pays up to $350 toward your retake fee against, and why it is the tier this page leads with.
Are the questions like the real exam?
Mostly, and here is the part that is honest rather than flattering. Every item is written to one of ABMDI's seven sections and weighted the way ABMDI weights them, against ABMDI's Fundamental Tasks and the 2024 edition of NIJ's guide for the scene investigator, with four options, one key and a reason given for every option — including why each wrong one is wrong. They are written for the job ABMDI tests: an investigator making a call at a scene or on the phone, not a student reciting a definition. What we will not claim: ABMDI states only that the exam is multiple choice and publishes no item format we could check, so the four options are a fact about OUR bank and not a claim about ABMDI's. Our mock also scores all 240 of its items, where the real paper grades 230 and pilots ten.
Is this the Registry exam or Board Certification?
The Registry exam — ABMDI's entry-level certification, and the one most investigators sit first. Passing it makes you an Associate (A-ABMDI) if you do not yet have documented scene experience, or a Diplomate (D-ABMDI) if you have at least 100 points of it; the exam is the same either way. Board Certification is a separate, advanced exam for experienced Diplomates, with written scene-scenario evaluations, and it earns Fellow (F-ABMDI). We do not cover Board Certification.
What about ABMDI's own materials and the training courses?
Use them — the core of them is free. ABMDI publishes the Fundamental Tasks of Medicolegal Death Investigation and names NIJ's "Death Investigation: A Guide for the Scene Investigator" as the scope of the exam; NIJ's current edition is 2024 and is a free download. ABMDI also offers an online sample to show you the testing platform. The training courses are a different purchase: Saint Louis University's 40-hour course was $875 for its March 2026 session, the University of North Dakota sells online modules from $39 to a $760 bundle, and the Death Investigation Training Academy's online course is $825 — and unlike us, all three carry ABMDI-approved continuing education. None of them is a scored rehearsal of a four-hour, seven-section paper, and Saint Louis University says outright that it does no testing. One more thing worth knowing, in ABMDI's own words: "Currently, the ABMDI does not endorse any program that claims to fulfill the requirements of certification or prepare an individual for the certification exam." That includes us. Prices move, so check them yourself.
Will my office pay for this?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking before you buy. Medical examiner and coroner offices commonly pay for training — Saint Louis University, for one, takes county and municipal checks against a purchase order — so ask whether there is a professional-development line you can use for exam prep. One thing we will not pretend: nothing here counts toward continuing education. Recertification is 45 hours of ABMDI-approved CE every five years and we are not an ABMDI-approved provider.
Where do I sit the exam?
Wherever you can make a quiet room. ABMDI's exam is computer-based and proctored live and remotely through its testing subcontractor; once your application is approved you receive a link, a proctor checks your government-issued photo ID, and the room needs to be quiet, well lit and free of distracting movement. No unauthorized aids are allowed. That is one reason our mocks run the full four hours in one sitting — the real thing is a long session at a desk with a camera on you.
What happens when my pass expires?
Your account stays and your work stays with it — notes, highlights and flashcard history are all there if you come back. The paid features stop. You can upgrade at any time and pick up exactly where you left off, and an upgrade always credits what you already paid.
My exam date moved. Does the plan adjust?
Yes. Change the date and the Game Plan rebuilds around the new one — it works backwards from your date, so a move forward compresses it and a move back spreads it out. Nothing is lost. Worth knowing the edge of your own window: ABMDI gives you twelve months from your application to complete testing and any retests, and an exam that is never scheduled inside it forfeits the fees.
Can I use it on my phone, and does it work offline?
Yes to both. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like an app. Your due flashcards and a set of practice questions download automatically, and the whole study guide downloads too, narrated audio included — so a long night on call with no signal is still study time. Scored mocks and the tutor wait for a connection.
Do you offer refunds if I change my mind?
Yes, separately from the pass guarantee: 24 hours on the 7-Day Pass, 48 hours on the 30-Day Pass, or 72 hours on Lifetime, measured from your purchase (or from your upgrade, if you upgraded) — no questions asked, as long as you haven't sat your exam yet. EEA and UK buyers also keep their 14-day statutory right. The SurePass Guarantee is the other promise — that one is about your exam result, not about changing your mind.
Why are SurePass guarantees limited?
Because we honor them. Every guarantee is a real financial commitment — on this exam it can include a retest fee on top of your refund — so a limited number opens for this exam each day. The allocation resets at midnight in your own time zone, and the counter shows how many of today's are still open.
