Questions, answered

What's inside the study portal?

The full Fast Track Study System — every practice question, every flashcard deck, full-length mock exams, narrated audio, Miles the AI tutor, and the entire study guide, every chapter readable and highlightable. The cheat sheet — the highest-yield facts as a PDF — is in the study portal on every pass, with instant access to download it. Every pass opens all of it, backed by the SurePass Guarantee.

How does the SurePass Guarantee work?

Score 85%+ on one full-length mock, sit the real exam, and if you don't pass we refund what you paid. On Lifetime, clear two mocks with your readiness meter at "Getting close" or above and we also pay up to $290 toward your retake fee — one funded retake, ever. AACN prices the retest by membership, so we reimburse what your receipt actually says, up to that ceiling. You file in your study portal with your official AACN score report. What it does not cover, stated plainly: your original exam fee, AACN membership dues, the $100 processing fee AACN keeps if you cancel an application, the $100 eligibility-period extension fee, duplicate score reports, and any review course you bought. And to be clear about whose promise this is: it is ours. We pay it out of our own revenue, and AACN neither endorses, administers nor backs it.

How many full-length mocks do I get?

Four scored full-length sittings, each a brand-new 150-question paper built to the Adult test plan in the shares AACN prints — Cardiovascular 13%, Respiratory 12%, Endocrine/Hematology/GI/Renal/Integumentary 21%, Musculoskeletal/Neurological/Behavioral 18%, Multisystem 16%, Professional Caring & Ethical Practice 20% — and timed to the real 3 hours. Practice questions and timed practice are unlimited and never use one. Worth knowing what you are comparing that to. AACN's own practice exam sells as a question bank — 150 questions for 30 days on the Basic subscription, 600+ for 180 days on Premium — and its product page says those practice exams "are not psychometrically valid exams and cannot be used to accurately predict or guarantee performance on an actual certification exam." Ours are drawn from the whole 1,200-question bank and are the score the guarantee is judged on.

Which pass should I buy?

Most people sitting the CCRN should buy Lifetime. It is the only tier that pays toward your retest, and it is the only one that outlasts your own window: AACN's confirmation email gives you an eligibility period that is normally 90 days and is currently 180, and a 30-Day Pass covers a fraction of that. Lifetime is also still there in three years if you choose to renew by exam rather than by CE. The 30-Day is right if your date is close and you only need the month. The 7-Day is built for one job — a final-week readiness check with your date already booked — and should be bought for that job only.

What score do I need to pass?

AACN publishes a passing score of 83 correct answers out of 125 scored questions, set by a modified Angoff study, and it is careful about what that number is: "The passing score is not a percentage but a raw number that may change over time as an exam is updated … or when the exam forms are periodically changed and equated for difficulty." The other 25 items on the paper are unscored pretest questions and do not count. So we do not turn 83 into a percentage and call it AACN's. The 85% our mocks are marked against is OURS — every one of our 150 items scores — and it sits well above AACN's standard on purpose: it is also the score that qualifies you for the guarantee, and we would rather you find out you are short on our paper than on theirs.

What does the exam cost, and what does a retake cost?

AACN charges $260 if you are a member and $375 if you are not; employers that buy vouchers in bulk, and groups of ten or more who apply together, pay less. If you don't pass, the retest is discounted — $185 for members, $290 for nonmembers — and AACN says that rate is "available until the exam is passed". You may sit the same exam up to four times in a rolling 12-month period. AACN keeps a $100 processing fee if you cancel an application, there are "no refunds or extensions for missed appointments", and an extension of your eligibility window costs $100. Our Lifetime guarantee pays up to $290 toward your retake fee — one funded retest — which is why it is the tier this page leads with.

Are the questions like the real exam?

Close, and here is the honest version. Every item is written to the Adult test plan and weighted the way AACN weights it, with four options and one key — the same shape as AACN's own published sample questions — and a reason given for every option, including why each wrong one is wrong. They are clinical vignettes asking for the priority, the most likely cause or the immediate action, because that is what the real paper asks. What we will not claim: these are not AACN's questions and no prep company has those. Our mock also scores all 150 of its items, where the real paper scores 125 — which makes ours the slightly harsher sitting.

What about AACN's own study materials?

Worth knowing exactly what they are and what they cost. AACN publishes the test plan, five sample questions and the exam handbook free. Its practice exam is a subscription question bank: a 30-question sample, Basic at $35 for members or $45 for nonmembers (150 questions, 30 days), and Premium at $75 or $90 (600+ questions, 180 days). Its online review course is $159 or $199, with 15.5 CE contact hours, and half price if you buy it with your exam application. Every one of those is marked non-refundable, and AACN states that it "does not approve, endorse, or require for eligibility use of any specific exam preparation products" — which applies to us as much as to anyone. They come from the body that writes the exam, and they are worth using alongside us rather than instead of us. Prices move, so check them before you buy.

Does this count toward my CE or CERPs?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Many CCRN review courses — AACN's own, Nicole Kupchik's, Critical Care Academy's — carry contact hours, and that is a real reason nurses buy them. We are not an accredited CE provider and nothing here counts toward the 100 CERPs CCRN renewal asks for. What Lifetime does give a certified nurse is the material, still there, if you ever choose to renew by exam.

Will my employer pay for this?

Ask — many hospitals already pay for the exam, and AACN runs discount programs built for exactly that: groups of ten or more who apply together pay less, and employers can buy exam vouchers in bulk. Prep is a separate line, so ask whether your unit has an education or professional-development budget you can use.

What happens when my pass expires?

Your account stays and your work stays with it — notes, highlights and flashcard history are all there if you come back. The paid features stop. You can upgrade at any time and pick up exactly where you left off, and an upgrade always credits what you already paid.

My exam date moved. Does the plan adjust?

Yes. Change the date and the Game Plan rebuilds around the new one — it works backwards from your date, so a move forward compresses it and a move back spreads it out. Nothing is lost. AACN lets you reschedule up to 48 hours before your appointment, inside your eligibility window.

Can I use it on my phone, and does it work offline?

Yes to both. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like an app. Your due flashcards and a set of practice questions download automatically, and the whole study guide downloads too, narrated audio included — so a break room with no signal is still study time. Scored mocks and the tutor wait for a connection.

Do you offer refunds if I change my mind?

Yes, separately from the pass guarantee: 24 hours on the 7-Day Pass, 48 hours on the 30-Day Pass, or 72 hours on Lifetime, measured from your purchase (or from your upgrade, if you upgraded) — no questions asked, as long as you haven't sat your exam yet. EEA and UK buyers also keep their 14-day statutory right. The SurePass Guarantee is the other promise — that one is about your exam result, not about changing your mind.

Why are SurePass guarantees limited?

Because we honor them. Every guarantee is a real financial commitment — on Lifetime it includes up to $290 toward your retake fee — so a limited number opens for this exam each day. The allocation resets at midnight in your own time zone, and the counter shows how many of today's are still open.
